Eyes Piercing Paper
To the girl at the desk across from me
With the straight black hair and college pullover,
Purple nails and tiny mole just off the nose,
A sharp tan toned face,
A cold but still beautiful shell:
I’m sorry your boyfriend robbed your virginity and went to college and never called back.
I heard you’re still waiting for the phone to ring,
And your eyes pierce the paper while you etch things in pen,
And I’m the one distracted,
I’m the one whose heart is leaping,
Splayed and soaring,
Unable to brace for a fall.
