Deceit
It waits until you’re almost asleep
And croons to you with its nightingale voice
Lulling, caressing, fondling
As it turns its scaled visage away
Cowering if your eyes are open
But if they’re not,
Beware
Stranger, beware
Of mustard gas
Of poppy seeds
Of anacondas
Which as you stroke them
Wind their tails around your neck
