For You, My Dear
We came by boat
By foot, by plane, by car
We were refugees of poverty
Of persecution, of boredom, of war
We came for the Land of the Free
Land of Opportunity, Lady Liberty
On streets paved with hope
Gold would be ours for the taking
Dreams would be our reality
No dream denied, no dream deferred
Only dreams achieved
We would reap what we had sown
In a home of our own
We fought their stares
Their scorn, their abuse, their words
We smiled through our tears
Our calluses, our broken bones, our hurts
We worked unwaveringly
For ourselves, for family
Through the door of chance
We drove to the end of the world
We counted our blessings
No road not tried, no road not traveled
Only roads taken
So smile on, Son and Daughter
Look no farther.
Our future is here.
Do you see it?
Do you live it?
Do you love it?
Our gift to you
